A Nation is Known by a Man it Keeps
Yet Another "Mir"
Here is an event that went unnoticed in the main stream media of Pakistan. All the snoopy “investigative” journalist guns were silent and no one even raised their hyper-critique eyebrows on what is labelled as a high profile & really expensive wedding in Dubai.
It was the wedding of Asma Rahman, daughter of Mir Shakeel-Ur-Rahman – Founder and Chairman of GEO TV

One wonders where the media owner like MSR get all this money from? Such huge amount? Is it possible and justifiable in this poor country? Where is all that money coming from?
I am 24 years old Pakistani whose grandfather migrated from India on 15 August 1947. I need not read books for Pakistan because i am Pakistan. When i saw those pictures of one media tycoons of Pakistan Mr Mir Shakil ur Rehman, i immediately found the conclusion why my young Pakistanis are so confused of their ideology. I saw pictures of top Indian bollywood stars in this wedding ceremony of Mr Mir Shakeel ur rehman's daughter, i also saw pictures of those who are efficiently and dedicatedly wed locked with India in confusing youth with regards to the very existence of Pakistan.

Delay in talks with Taliban showing govt weakness: PPP
LAHORE (Web Desk) – Opposition leader in National Assembly has said prices of daily use items were skyrocketing after the hike in electricity, petrol and dollar prices.
He said this while talking to media persons in Lahore.
About the withdrawal of subsidy on electricity, Syed Khurshid Shah said PML-N was running the country like a profit-making organization.
“The country is not Ittefaq Foundry of Sharif Brithers,” he remarked.
Shah said PTI’s protest over the appointment of Chairman NAB was unjustified and inappropriate.
He once again claimed that he had contacted Shah Mehmood Qureshi twice for the nominations for Chairman NAB slot but there was no response.
About the ongoing operation in Karachi, Shah said MQM itself demanded the operation and now it was raising objections to it.
“PPP will play its role as an effective Opposition in the parliament and will not indulge in ‘GO Musharraf GO’ type of politics.
Sonia Gandhi denies retirement rumours
New Delhi (Agencies) - Indian ruling party Congress chief Sonia Gandhi has ruled out premature retirement, scotching the speculations that she could call it a day in 2016 when she turns 70.
Lok Janshakti Party chief Ram Vilas Paswan asked the Congress chief about the retirement speculations during a meeting. "I have never said this," Paswan quoted her as saying in response.
The rejoinder is seen as refuting the reports that began swirling recently in the wake of her illness as well as Rahul Gandhi s belated enthusiasm about the leadership role.
It is likely to come as a relief to many parties and allies who prefer continuity against the volatility of change that they expect to result from Rahul Gandhi s unconventional approach to politics.
Sonia Gandhi is seen as the sheet-anchor of UPA and has displayed sensitivity to the needs of allies, a reason why the allies are seen to prefer her in the leadership role.
During his meeting too, Paswan asked Sonia to take a lead role in uniting the secular parties before the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
"I told her that BJP will not come to power even though it may have allies like Shiv Sena and Akali Dal and a few other parties. So, there is a possibility of only UPA being able to form the next government," he said.
Even within Congress, Sonia is seen to play the role of the stabiliser. During the recent controversy kicked off by Rahul Gandhi s public outburst against the ordinance on convicted lawmakers, Sonia reached out to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in public addresses to soothe any frayed nerves
Search is on for new army chief
ISLAMABAD (AFP) - Five months on from a successful transition of power after general elections, Pakistan is poised to make a decision of arguably even greater importance -- the appointment of a new army chief.
The incumbent, General Ashfaq Kayani, on Sunday confirmed he will step down as scheduled on November 29, scotching rumours he was to keep a hand on the reins in some new role.
Four lieutenant generals are seen as in the hunt to lead the 600,000-strong army -- widely considered the most powerful job in Pakistan.
Whoever is chosen will take over with Pakistan facing an array of daunting challenges both domestically and internationally -- proposed talks with homegrown militants, vexed relations with India and the role Pakistan wants to play in promoting peace in Afghanistan.
Analysts said that the new man is likely to maintain Kayani s pragmatic approach to relations with the United States and his attitude of not opposing civilian efforts to improve ties with old enemy India.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif -- whose last appointment as army chief, general Pervez Musharraf, deposed him in 1999 -- will choose the new chief from a shortlist prepared by Kayani, who was appointed in 2007 and given an extension in 2010.
The highest-ranking contender is Lieutenant General Haroon Aslam, currently the chief of logistics staff.
Aslam took part in army operations against the Taliban in the northwestern district of Swat in 2009 and served as chief of the paramilitary Rangers in central Punjab province.
Behind Aslam in rank but seen by some commentators as favourite for the job, particularly if Aslam is made chairman of the joint chiefs of staff committee, is Lieutenant General Rashad Mehmood, currently chief of general staff at the army s General Headquarters.
The other main runners are Lieutenant General Raheel Sharif, whose elder brother won Pakistan s highest military award for valour in the 1971 war with India, and Lieutenant General Tariq Khan, who has taken part in successful counter-insurgency operations and has earned a reputation as an excellent field commander.
The May general election marked a major landmark for Pakistani democracy -- which has been punctuated by three military coups -- as the first time an elected government completed its term and handed over power through the ballot box.
Much credit was given to Kayani for resisting the temptation to meddle in politics and as he confirmed his retirement he stressed that the armed forces "fully support and want to strengthen" democracy.
Security analyst Imtiaz Gul said he expected this to continue.
"The army and its chief will have to follow whatever the civilian leadership defines," he told AFP.
"Kayani s tenure as army chief marks a huge step forward in Pakistan s democratic transition because he has set new benchmarks for depoliticising the army s role."
New army chief can t be anti-American
=======================================
The outgoing army chief is said to enjoy close ties with the US and played a key role in ordering and supervising operations against Taliban and Al-Qaeda linked militants in the country s troubled northwest.
Pakistan has a vital part to play as the US-led NATO force in Afghanistan withdraws combat troops by the end of 2014 and the new army chief s relations with the Americans will be crucial.
Despite seething anti-US sentiment on the Pakistani street and several years of difficult relations with Washington, the military still enjoys significant American support.
"I don t think any army chief can be anti-American, as a lot depends on American assistance as well as equipment and technical support they are providing to Pakistan," defence analyst and retired general Talat Masood told AFP.
"Any one of the four officers who is appointed army chief will maintain functional and cooperative relations with the US."
Analyst Hasan Askari agreed, noting that the four likely candidates are well established officers -- there are no wildcard outsiders.
Sharif came to power promising to improve relations with India, though recent clashes in disputed Kashmir have threatened his good intentions.
With the army engaged in fighting homegrown militants in tribal areas along the Afghan border, Masood said he expected Kayani s replacement to support efforts to cool tensions to the east.
"He would certainly seek to normalise ties with India to focus more on the western border because the army remains highly stretched and it is difficult for them to be engaged on two fronts at the same time," Masood said.
Less clear is how the struggle with homegrown Taliban militants will proceed.
Sharif has mooted talks, but both he and Kayani have stressed the insurgents must accept the constitution, which they seem unwilling to do, and a recent bloody spate of attacks has seriously undermined public support for the idea.

Dasti Calls Malala A US Produced ‘Drama’
Multan: Member of National Assembly Jamshed Dasti is reported to have said that Malala Yousufzai, the young Pakistani educational activist is no more than a drama staged by the United States to delay the peace talks with Taliban, the Islamic militant group that the government intends to, for the restoration of peace in the country
During a press conference held in Multan, Dasti expressed these views while talking to the media. He talked about the nomination of the Swati girl’s for the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize, which she however failed to achieve.

Malala last year had been shot in her head in a school van on October 9, to which the TTTP had claimed responsibility. After the incident, she has emerged as an international icon. Presently she resides in Britain along with her family, where she had been taken for the medical treatment after the incident happened.
